Get Your Arizona Driver License
At ATA Motor Vehicle Services (MVS), we are an authorized Arizona Third-Party MVD provider.
That means we can assist you with instruction permits, written tests, road tests, driver licenses, and Travel IDs — often with shorter wait times and personalized service. Below is everything you need to know to prepare.
Proof of Identity (One Required)
- Certified U.S. Birth Certificate
- Valid U.S. Passport
- Permanent Resident Card
- Certificate of Naturalization
Proof of Social Security Number (One Required)
- Social Security card
- W-2 form
- 1099 Form
- Pay Stub Displaying Full SSN
Two Proofs of Arizona Residency – Documents must show your name and Arizona residential address. Examples include:
- Utility Bill (electric, water, gas, internet)
- Bank or Credit Card Statement
- Lease Agreement or Mortgage Document
- Arizona Vehicle Registration
- Insurance Policy
- School Records (for minors)
- Official Government Mail
Both documents must be dated within the recent timeframe (generally within the last 90 days is recommended). Documents must show your name and physical Arizona address (no P.O. Boxes). If your name has changed, you must bring legal documentation (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order).
Instruction Permit (First-Time Drivers). Minimum Age: 15 years and 6 months. At our office, you will:
- Complete Application
- Submit Your Documents
- Pay Applicable Fees
- Have your photo taken
- Take a vision screening
- Take the written knowledge test
The written test covers:
- Arizona traffic laws
- Road signs and signals
- Safe driving practices
- Defensive driving techniques
If under 18, a parent or legal guardian with a valid ID or Driver’s License must be present to sign consent.
Study Resources:
We strongly recommend reviewing the manual thoroughly before testing. You must score 80 percent to pass the exam and secure you permit.
With your instruction permit:
- You must drive with a licensed driver age 21 or older seated beside you
- If under 18:
- Complete 30 hours of supervised driving
- 10 hours must be at night
- The permit is valid for 12 months.
When eligible, you may schedule your road test with our office.
Road Test Requirements – You must bring:
- Your valid Arizona instruction permit
- A properly registered vehicle
- A vehicle in safe operating condition
The written test covers:
- Brake lights
- Turn signals
- Headlights
- Tire condition
- Windshield visibility
If the vehicle is unsafe, the test will be canceled. Fees will not be reimbursed.
What to Expect During the Road Test – The road test typically includes:
- Proper vehicle control
- Smooth acceleration and braking
- Proper lane usage
- Obeying traffic signals and signs
- Right and left turns
- Lane changes
- Three-point turn
- Reverse maneuver
- Maintaining safe following distance
The test usually lasts 20-25 minutes.
If you pass:
- You will receive a temporary credential
- Your permanent license will be mailed
Graduated Driver License (Under 18). For the first 6 months:
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. (with limited exceptions)
- Passenger restrictions apply
Adults 18 and Older – First Time Drivers – If you are 18+:
- No mandatory permit holding period
- No required practice hours
- You must still pass the written and road test

New Arizona Residents – If transferring an out-of-state license:
- Must transfer within 15 days of establishing residency
- May not need written or road test (case-by-case)
- Must surrender out-of-state license
